GASOLINE: The price of gasoline has soared and plunged during the past five years. In the second quarter Americans spend 34.4% more on gasoline, $400 billion worth of fuel, home heating oil and alternative fuels are listed separately. CABLE/SATELLITE TV SERVICE: As DIRECTV dukes it out with Dish and Time Warner and Cox fight them both, Americans spent more than $83 billion on such services in the second quarter, 36.2% more than the first quarter of 2006, according to Bureau of Economic Analysis data. GLASSES AND CONTACT LENSES: Did the recession hurt the eyesight of millions of Americans?
