Building for the Future It's a partnership like no other in Canada, one that has stood the test of time and benefited scores of trades students by giving them skills they could not otherwise get.
And the relationship between Thompson Rivers University's School of Trades and Technology and the Canadian Home Builder's Association in Kamloops has also benefited countless homeowners, by improving the quality of housing in the market, said Lindsay Langill, dean of the school. The working partnership between TRU and the oakley symbol CHBA has been in place for 20 years, Langill said. It manifests itself in different projects, but the largest and most visible is the construction each year of the Dream Home, a house that is ultimately raffled off as part of the YM YWCA's annual fundraising effort. The Dream Home project gives TRU students the opportunity to work and learn with cutting edge building technology, he said. While other schools in oakley clearance sunglasses Canada have students build barns and garden sheds often indoors TRU students are working with the latest techniques and materials. The Y Dream Homes always represent the latest and best in "green" homebuilding technology, he said. This year's home at Sun Rivers incorporated many different kinds of energy efficient systems, from unique insulation material to photovoltaic and solar cells. "Any of these green homes, they are always cutting edge of technology," Langill said. "We try out completely new and innovative building technologies. "The kids who get training at TRU are exposed to the latest building materials, styles and technologies, at real worksites under real conditions. "It's 20C, and they are out there with their nail guns. They are not in a sheltered situation." The experience of working on real job sites cannot be overlooked, he said. TRU students mix with contractors, developers, other trades, planners and building inspectors. They learn a side of the oakley retailers business not possible to teach in a classroom. "They are engaged to the full depth of that industry," Langill said. "Without this kind of training, TRU would try to simulate the experience as best it can, but this is clearly the best way to do it." The impact of advanced training translates into a tradesperson who knows quality houses, he added. As many oakley brand sunglasses of TRU's students over the past 20 years have gone on to careers in Kamloops and the Interior, local homeowners have inevitably benefited. "The point is, are we training a student to what industry wants, and the answer is, yes, they are getting hired," Langill said. For the CHBA, the project started anew last month, with a call to developer members of the association for lot proposals. Those proposals are now in and a committee will look at each and recommend where the 2012 home will be constructed. Patsy Bourassa, executive director of the association, said a location in Westsyde, for example, provides more building time than Aberdeen. Location is just one of a myriad of details and decisions. The project is an important fundraiser for the association.
Builders volunteer time on committees and often cut their charges on project management of the home, for example. Among the keys for success are assessing market demand, whether through realtors on location or the design. Bourassa said a member designer will start soon on the project's look and feel, with construction slated for July.
