Blogging the Economy Since I last wrote on this blog, political issues, not economic issues, have dominated the nation's attention.

Repeated stalemates in Congress, the failure of the "super committee" to address deficit reduction, and now the upcoming elections have rendered the government impotent on the three most important economic issues of this time: jobs, jobs and jobs. Sure, the most recent published data on jobs and unemployment have been better than previous months, but they are still rather putrid for this late in the recovery. example, the administration was pleased to see the unemployment rate fall to 8.6%, but it seems that part of this drop was due to people leaving the labor force by stopping looking for work hardly a positive sign. By the way, could you ever imagine that we would think that an 8.6% unemployment rate is anything other than awful? If this is the "new normal," it stinks. I find the discussions about the reasons for the recession off focus at this moment. Every recession has its culprits and mistakes, but it's long been time to focus on the recovery. By analogy, if you think of a recession as a tornado that sweeps through a town damaging physical structures and harming humans, the recovery is the period afterwards when we put things back together. In this economic recovery, many are still blaming the tornado but paying less attention to the debris scattered around us. was obvious to many of us that this recovery would be difficult. The recoveries from the previous two recessions oakley official store were dubbed "jobless recoveries," and there was every reason to expect that this recovery would exhibit the same phenomena: a very slow recovery in jobs with lingering high unemployment rates. the politicians knew this, or at least their economic advisers let them know. However, instead of focusing on the recovery and promoting job growth, the government's next action was to pass a controversial health bill. The passage of the Affordable Health Care Act was not only very disruptive, the "jobless" part of the recovery was deepened by the contentiousness and bitterness that resulted in Congress. Why weren't jobs the immediate and primary focus in the recovery? Why oakley half jacket lenses did it take so long to discuss legislation intended to promote jobs? the time the focus turned to jobs, the Congress oakley prescription glasses and administration had become so divided that even the simplest of things, like the recent passage of the extension of the payroll tax cut, took forever and was full of acrimony. the meantime, the odds are still stacked against job growth. The elections are more than 10 months away, and we will have to endure large amounts of political posturing on jobs but likely few real actions to promote jobs. can't wait until we, as a nation, realize that the real issues are jobs, jobs and jobs. The CEO of corporate America realize this. There is more insider selling of stock right now then there was before the 2008 market crash. The entire system is being held up with smoke and mirrors until 2012. The Wall St criminals would have already begun selling stocks in earnest if Congress hadn given them an extention of the Bush tax cuts into Q1 of 2012. Now that 2011 is history, well, let the selling begin! It a good thing too. Morgan, etc are all bankrupt entities. The American sheeple will speak loudly and clearly come Nov too. It will be a huge step in the right direction when "previous experience at Government Sachs" is NOT a requirement to serve in government. It is abnormal this sense of limited hiring, companies constantly streamlining, and then the real work no longer pays while fuel keeps above 2.00 a gallon. I really think if the govt stayed out of trucking, millions of americans could make a fair wage in trucking. Trucking is big in America, and provides decent work. Apparently the UE rate has dropped to 8.5%. Not nad on the face, but when you peel away the onion. the non institutional working age population went from 240.441 million to 240.584, a gain of 143,000 people of working age. But the number of employed people went down from 141.070 million to 140.681 a loss of 389,000. Adding the two, which is the correct way to look at it, the economy on a population adjusted basis lost 532,000 jobs. Hmmmmmm, how can that be? More smoke and mirrors from our government but would you expect anything less in an election year? Got to get that UE rate down so the sheeple vote for Oh blah blah. Also, the decrease in unemployment is not soley based on people leaving the labor market. As you know, the unemployment rate is calculated by dividing those who are unemployed but looking for work by those are employed along with the same unemployed and looking. Therefore the decrease in the unemployment rate is really a combination of increase in employment and the shrinking of the labor force. Also, the unemployment numbers are based on the Current Employment Statistics which don include the self employed. If we look at the Current Population Survey, which includes the self employed, there is a net increase of 278,000 jobs which is very close to the 315,000 people who dropped out of the labor market. Therefore, the shrinking of the labor market is not the sole reason of the decrease in unemployment. Disgusting. If you had a chance to watch the State of the Union the other night I sure you agree that the current issues at hand will increasingly lose importance as November approaches. Instead of thinking up ways to resolve our problems you note per any of his speeches that he waits for others to bring a bill to him. He passed on the oil reserves in North America of which will now be taken on boats to China and Asia, who will reap the benefits of cheap oil instead of us. Ironically, the railroads that will ship the oil to the boats are owned by Mr. Warren Buffet, who wife sat with the First Lady and who has been the talk of the town with the new capital gains tax proposals (named after Mr. Buffet). The oil we passed up on would have called for thousands of miles of pipelines to be built to transport it into the US, requiring thousands of people to work in this effort, thus creating thousands of jobs and an indeterminable amount of economic stimulus. He passed on it claiming that it isn environmentally friendly, yet he said that we will use environmentally conscious efforts to create new jobs. Where are the ideas that beat the current alternatives? Is he going to push for Cap and Trade again, to put even higher pressures on the companies that can afford to hire people? Furthermore, his Cap and Trade bill would eliminate foreign investment in the US economy, as international businesses will be less likely to operate in the already highest taxed nation in the world. It seems as though his personal agenda overcome our country initiatives, and until our Commander in Chief synchronizes his objectives with those of the American taxpayers we will continue to settle for unsatisfactory unemployment levels. I also thought it to be quite ironic when Congress jumped to their feet as Mr. President brought up the congressional insider trading law proposals. Since Mr. President asked Congress to write up the silver oakley sunglasses bill, he will receive no such bill (only applause). It has created the highest standards for footwear as far as nike air max 90comfort and style are concerned. This piece of history was created by Tinker Hatfield, the design genius of the Nike Brand.
