Baxendale Group Members About Our Research GroupWe specialise in the design and application of enabling technologies such as flow chemistry, microwave oakley subglasses reactors, immobilised reagents and scavengers to expedite complex chemical syntheses.
His studies involved a 6 month period as an Erasmus student at the Innovative Technology Centre at the University of Cambridge, UK (with Prof. Steven V. Ley and Dr Ian R. Baxendale), where he developed a new flow based oxazole synthesis. He soon returned to Cambridge to pursue his doctoral studies with Prof. Steven V. Ley where he developed flow processes for Curtius rearrangements, different fluorination reactions as well as important heterocycle syntheses. Upon completion of his PhD in 2010 Marcus was awarded a Feodor Lynen toral Fellowship (Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, Germany) allowing him to join the group of Prof. Larry E. Overman at UC Irvine, USA (2011 2013). During his oakley shades 2016 time in California his research focused on the synthesis of naturally occurring terpenes as well as analogues of ETP alkaloids. The latter project generated potent and selective histone methyltransferase inhibitors and opened routes towards new probes for epigenetic diseases which are currently under further investigation. In early 2013 Marcus returned to the UK and took up a postdoctoral position with Prof. Ian R. Baxendale at the University of Durham, where his interests concentrate on the development of flow and batch based strategies towards valuable compounds en route for regenerative medicines. Laura K. Smith 3rd year PhD Laura Smith (1991) was born in green oakley sunglasses Cambridge, UK. She attended Durham University, graduating in 2013 with an M. Chem (Hons) in Chemistry. During her third year she completed a 3 month internship in Analytical Sciences with P Wella in Darmstadt, Germany. Her fourth year undergraduate research project was completed at Durham free oakley sunglasses under the supervision of Prof. Patrick G. Steel on the subject of C H activation and iridium catalysed borylation of amino acids and peptides. She is currently reading for a PhD under the supervision of Prof. Ian R. Baxendale. 1st year PhD student Alexander Nicholls (1994) was raised in Cambridge, UK. He completed his M. Chem (Hons) undergraduate studies at the University of Durham, graduating in 2016. His masters project, under the supervision of Prof. Ian Baxendale, involved research in understanding and developing applications of copper mediated phenolic nitrosylation and in this context, the Baudisch reaction. He is currently reading for a PhD under the supervision of Prof. Ian Baxendale and Dr. David Hodgson in partnership with Thomas Swan Co, investigating thiol containing aromatic compounds for application as cement additives. 4th year NatSci student Hannah was born and raised in London. She studies Chemistry and Biology within Natural Sciences and her final year project will be studying pyrroloindoloquinazoline templates in understanding epigenetic diseases. This project will be under the supervision of Prof. I. R. Baxendale in the Department of Chemistry and Prof. CAB Jahoda in the Department of Biosciences.4th year MChem student Cornelie was born in London but has Belgian roots. In my final year project of my MChem degree, I will be studying 2,3,6 trisubstituted pyridines as templates for new antibacteria in Prof. Ian R. Baxendale's group. Ishika Saha 4th year MChem student I was born and raised in Kolkata, India. For the final year project of my MChem degree, I will be studying the synthesis and reactivity of 3 benzalphthalide derivatives towards bioactive heterocylic compounds, under the supervision of Prof. Ian R. Baxendale.4th year MChem student Michael's information will be update soon. Anna Maria LozzaAnna Maria is an undergraduate student at the University of Perugia. She is working on a Thesis project at the Department of Pharmaceutical Science under the supervision of Prof. Antimo Gioiello.
Her research is focused on the application of flow methodologies for the synthesis of new chemical probes and bioactive compounds. She is currently doing an internship (Erasmus+ traineeship mobility) at Durham University under the supervision of Prof. Ian Baxendale.
