But it was the dry stone walls and quarry faces of Derbyshire and seascapes of Cornwall which inspired him. Now to mark the centenary of artist Harry Ousey's birth, an exhibition is to be staged at Salford Art Gallery of his 'lost' works. It will include some of the 70 paintings that were found in a loft more than a decade after his death discovered by his niece, Sue Astles. Longsight artist Harry Ousey's unseen pictures Sue, from Glossop, said: "In 1997 when my aunt, Susie, buy oakley lenses Harry's wife, died I went to her home in Hertforshire, where she lived with her sister. "In the loft, drawers, and cupboards, were portfolios of watercolours, oil paintings, and collages. "Susie and Harry had gone to live in the south of France in 1976. They lived there until Harry's death in 1985. "Susie came back to the UK after he died bringing as much as Harry's work as she could with her. "The portfolios sat in the loft, it was too painful for her to unpack the paintings and see them again. "But as the only member of the family I was not going to let them go back in the loft. "I love his work. He was born in Longsight, and married at the Baptist Church in Slade Lane in 1942. "His work was included in an exhibition at Salford in 1948, the pieces were chosen by L S Lowry and Mr E Frape, the director of the gallery at the time." Harry served in the Royal Artillery in the Second World War. After the war he lived in Hayfield, High Peak, and then moved to St Ives.
His oakley retail stores first solo show was in a London gallery in 1962 followed by several others in the capital. But he moved abroad to France, and later lived in Edinburgh, Dorset, and Hertfordshire.
