30 Seconds With Shaun White Shaun White, the professional snowboarder and skateboarder, competed this weekend in skate vert at the Dew Tour season opener in Ocean City, Md.
At the Winter X Games, White, a two time Olympic gold medalist in the halfpipe, has dominated slopestyle snowboarding, which involves performing tricks in the air as well as on rails and boxes. This month the International Olympic Committee approved the inclusion of men's and women's slopestyle, and freestyle skiing for the 2014 Games in Sochi, Russia. White, 24, visited Manhattan recently to promote his signature line of Oakley sunglasses. VINCENT M. MALLOZZI Q. Are you excited that slopestyle snowboarding is an official Olympic sport? A. It's heavy; I'm really excited. It's one of those things that really shows that the sport is growing. All these guys that don't do halfpipe and weren't getting any credit for all the time and effort they put into slopestyle will now be getting credit for it on the world stage. Q. It's cool now that it's a bigger event because I'm motivated to learn new tricks. I'm pumped, man. Q. You had taken time off from slopestyle to focus on the halfpipe for the Olympics. One publication named you the No. 2 most powerful and marketable athlete out of 100, placing you oakley white between Peyton Manning and Tiger Woods. What makes you such an appealing athlete? A. Gosh, I don't know. I guess a lot of guys who achieve success are like, "Yeah, I got my car." They're just playing a role. But despite some of the extraordinary things that have happened to me, I always feel like I'm the same person, and I think people connect with that. People who saw me compete in the Olympics know that I was truly honored and excited to be there. Q. You have expressed an interest in acting, and you appear in the new movie "Friends With Benefits." Was that fun? A. It was my first movie and it was really cool, but kind of bizarre. You have to remember that everything I do when I'm competing, people cheer. But on a movie set, there's a lot of silence because they have to get the sound quality just right. In one scene, we're hanging out at this club and everybody is dancing and all of a sudden, they drop the music out and everyone is still dancing. I was sunglasses like, "What is going on?" Q. Are you pursuing other movie roles? A. I'm not really out there pursuing that, but if the right role comes along, I would definitely be interested. I'm dating an up and coming actress right now who has had some roles here and there. Q. Did you ever think as a child that boarding would allow you to earn millions of dollars in corporate deals and sponsorships? A. I knew there was a certain level that I could get to within the sporting world. But as I continued with my career, not only did I grow, but the sport grew. All of a sudden, all of these doors opened to me. It's been amazing. I guess I was born at the right time. Q. You enjoy playing guitar. Who are your favorite guitarists? A. Jimmy Page, Jimi Hendrix and Angus Young. Q. Are you a better snowboarder or skateboarder? A.
Probably snowboarding, just because the tricks come easier. It's easier for me to learn a new trick snowboarding because skateboarding is so technical. You're not strapped into the board and any slight movement of your foot, your board goes flying away and the run is over.
